What's New in May 2011?
Accessibility

Dashboard lights can now be shown with visual as well as color indicators. This is based on user preference, set from the Personal Information page.



Announcements

Start and end dates are now more flexible, allowing specific start and end dates rather than previously specified time periods. Announcements can now contain images and math equations.

Teachers can now specify group- or role-specific recipients for course announcements.

Authors

Authors can specify a password on all item types (previously supported only for assessments).

Authors can now restore previous versions of an item from the item's History or from the Course Files panel in the Syllabus.

This can also be done on any content from the resources panel.



Blogs and Journals

BrainHoney now supports two new item types: blogs and journals. Blogs and journals are free response assignments where the student has an opportunity to express their thoughts on a particular topic or event. Blogs can be given a title, extract, and body. You also can add tag words for easy grouping. Classmates will see the blog entry and be able to comment on it. Journals are identical to blogs, except that they are private between the teacher and the student.

Course Content Ratings

Users can now rate course content and see average ratings within the course. Users will see average ratings given by other users with the same role in the course, i.e., students will see average student ratings, teachers will see average teacher ratings, etc.

Email

Teachers can now send email to specific course groups or domain defined course roles.

New Posts

The student's homepage supports a new field for each course, "New Posts". New Posts lists the number of new posts on all active discussion boards within the course.

Observers

BrainHoney now supports observer accounts! This new feature will be most useful for parents, tutors, or principals. As observers, they can view course content and grades for a particular enrollment, but cannot submit assignments or take assessments. Observer accounts are set up by administrators via the Administrator Dashboard.



Upon login, observers are presented with a list of all enrollments currently being observed. Selecting a student's name will bring the observer to a page listing each of the student's courses actively observed.



SCORM Objects

From the course syllabus, authors can specify the display format for SCO content items in the gradebook. Setting the review format to "Student response summary table" will enable a generic BrainHoney rendering. Setting the review format to "Rendered activity content with student's responses" will enable rendering by the SCO itself.

Search

You can now drag and drop items from the search results page directly into your course syllabus based upon the Open Education Resource content as well as any subscriptions or subscriber records you have.

Subscriptions

You can now subscribe users or domains to other domains or courses. This new feature enables content sharing and reuse between teachers, classes, a school, a district, and even between districts and domains. When editing a course, course authors are able to search for items in other courses. The scope of the search is based on their own subscriptions or the subscriptions of the domain their user account belongs to. Subscriptions are created and managed by Administrators.

Add a Subscriber Step One: Select Add Subscriber, choose subscriber type.

Add a Subscriber Step Two: Find and select user or domain.

Add a Subscriber Step Three: Specify time period, click OK.

To add a Subscription, follow similar steps from the Subscriptions tab of the Administration page. When you subscribe a domain to a course or another domain, you are presented with the additional option of selecting a subscription role. If enabled, the subscription role functions as a filter, specifying which users in the domain have access to the subscription.



View as Student

Authors or Teachers can now easily create and manage a test student enrollment. This allows the teacher to perform actual previews and tests on course content. To create a test enrollment, click on your name and click add student enrollment. To (a) return to the teacher view, (b) remove the student enrollment, or (c) reset the student enrollment, click on your name again and select the appropriate option from the same drop-down menu.



The test student enrollment's scores are viewable in the gradebook under the teacher's name. The enrollment (and gradebook entries) are deleted when the teacher selects Remove Student Enrollment.
