Note: The objectives were selected on the Assessment Properties tab. You may return at any time to modify the objectives related to the exam.

BrainHoney provides six question types for assessments:

• Multiple Choice
• Short Answer
• Essay
• Matching
• Multiple Answer
• Ordering

1.

In the Questions window, beneath the first objective, click the blank question placeholder (the line that says "Click here to edit the question"). The blank question displays in the Question Builder.

2.

By default, the question type is multiple choice. To change the question type, click the Multiple Choice link, and select the question type.

3.

The default point value is specified on the Assessment Settings page. To override the value for a question, click the point value link and type a new point value in the Points box.

4.

Add the question detail. To add formatting, an image, a link, or multimedia to a question, click the Advanced Formatting icon beside the stem or option. This will open an editor through which you may format the text and add additional types of content.

Following are tips for each type of question:

Multiple choice questions. Type the question stem, and then press Enter to begin entering options. After you enter each option, press the Enter key. Click the radio button for the correct answer. If you have created a question with options that include "None of the above" or "All of the above", click the Multiple Choice link, and then click the Maintain response order checkbox (this ensures that the "None of the above" option will always display last, even if you opt to randomize the question order).

Short answer questions. Type the question stem, and then type the answer in the text box. Note: when short answer questions are graded by the system, the student's response is compared to the characters that you type in the text box.

Essay questions. Type the question stem. Essay questions are the only question not graded by the system. Once the student has submitted the assessment, the essay will be available for you to grade.

Matching questions. Type the question stem, and then press Enter to display the row for the first matching pair. On the left of the equal sign, type the first stimulus, and on the right side of the equal sign, type the correct response. Press Enter to create another pair, and repeat the process for each matching pair.

Multiple answer questions. Type the question stem, and then press Enter to begin entering options. After you enter each option, press the Enter key. For each response that is correct, click the checkbox to select it.

Ordering questions. Type the question stem, and then press Enter to begin entering options. After you enter each option, press the Enter key. Make sure you enter the options in the correct order.

5.

When you have finished adding the question detail, click Add at the bottom of the Question Builder to add another question to the same objective, or click the Add button beneath the objective button for which you want to add the next question.

6.

When they are viewed by the student taking the assessment, questions either display in default order or they are randomized (if that option was specified in the Assessment Settings).

In the default order, the questions are first sorted by objectives, in the order that was specified when the objectives were added to the course, and then by the order that you added the questions within those objectives. Within objectives, you may reorder the questions by dragging and dropping them.

If you determine that a question should be assigned to another objective, you may drag it to the other objective and drop it in.

Note: There is also an uncategorized subset for questions that were added that haven't been added to objectives. In best practice, you should ensure that there are no questions left assigned to the uncategorized subset, because all questions should be evaluating an objective.

7.

To preview your assessment, click the Preview link. This will lauch a small window which will display all of your questions.

Note: This feature displays all of the questions that you have created: this will not restrict the number of questions to those specified in the Question Pool (if applicable).

8.

If you want to add advanced features, such as feedback and groups, click the Advanced link.

Warning: Once you edit a set of assessment questions using the Advanced link, you will no longer be able to open the questions using the Question Builder.

9.

When you have finished adding questions, click Done.
